That’s right, you guys are being treated to three renderings per story. It’s going to be a good one, since we know everybody loves to imagine the Mazda MX-5 Miata as something other than itself.
We recently had the pleasure of testing the 2016 version of the Miata and can’t find enough good things to say about it. By going back to basics and engineering everything from the ground up for lightness, the Japanese automaker has given us a sweet handling machine.
However, as some of you might remember, Alfa Romeo very publicly announced a partnership with Mazda a few years ago. The deal was supposed to result in an Italian version of the car, the revival of the Alfa Spyder. But it didn’t happen, which is a real shame.
Still, the first rendering made by Theophilus Chin lets us dream of what that car might have looked like. With the front end of the Giulia sedan grafted onto the Miata’s little body, we have a sportscar with Italian flair and Japanese engineering. Besides redesigning the body, Alfa was also supposed to install one of its engines. Unfortunately, now that the project is canceled, we’ll never know what the Miata would be like with a 4C engine.
Next up, we have a Scion version, which is even more farfetched. The Scion FR-S and Mazda MX-5 are essentially rivals, even though one is a coupe. However, Scion rebadges the Mazda2 sedan as their iA, and the two will collaborate on some other projects.
Finally, we have the Tesla version, which emerges as a virtual successor to the Roadster model that the EV company started its business with. We kind of like the way this rendering came out. It would be fun to go drifting in an all-electric production convertible. Who knows, perhaps the next Tesla Roadster really will look like an MX-5.
