2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata with Poppy Art Car Livery Isn't Just for Show

In the United Kingdom, people wear poppy pins to commemorate the brave men and women who have died in war conflicts since 1914. The American Legion was the first to adopt the rememberance poppy in the United States, but now it's time for the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata to wear Papaver rhoeas.

The stunning four-wheeled creation in the adjacent photo gallery is your typical fourth-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata, but with a twist. No, we're not referring to the fact that there are no door panels or that the interior door handles have been replaced with red nylon pulls. And no, the race-ready roll cage and not-so-subtle air dam above the front grille aren't the focal points of this Japanese-born roadster either.

The twist we're referring to comes in the guise of a poppy-themed livery, which gives the Mazda MX-5 Miata an old school art cat feeling to it. Mazda United Kingdom teamed up with Mission Motorsport to mark Remembrance Day in style. At 4.00pm UK time on Saturday, this little fellow here will start its engine and race for about 1,000 kilometers around the Anglesey circuit in North Wales. What's it trying to prove?

It proves that motorsport can also provide "respite, rehabilitation, vocational support and training to those affected by military operations," the right thing to do for the greater good of mankind. Wounded servicemen will also compete in the Race of Remembrance to prove that nothing can stop human will if it is strong enough. Once someone has made the decision to succeed, nothing can stop the fire burning inside them.

And this is where the poppy-themed Mazda MX-5 Miata comes into focus yet again. Despite its 1.5-liter engine, many people prefer this four-cylinder lump over the more powerful 2.0-liter motor because it lends zest to the driving experience. And oh boy, the MX-5 surely knows how to deliver fun in the twisties.

Editor's note: did you know that this year we're commemorating the 101st anniversary of WWI?
