The Mazda MX-5 Miata was always considered a chick car. The funny thing is that it wasn’t necessarily because of who drove it but more because of how it was designed. That being said, the 2016 Mazda MX-5 couldn’t fall out of the pattern laid out by its predecessors.
And yet, looking at it in various photos you might think that it resembles a snake from the front or maybe it was a Komodo Dragon? Well, that last option might be closer to what the designers had in mind when putting it together.
That’s because the new Miata is part of the avant-garde of new models shaped following Mazda’s new Kodo philosophy. According to them, ‘Kodo captures the very instant energy becomes motion.’ This design language has shaped the new Mazda2, Mazda3, Mazda6, CX-5 and CX-3 models apart from the Miata.
And you can see its influence everywhere, even under the bonnet. That’s where Mazda decided to go a different way and instal a unique aluminum valve cover that actually adds weight and cost. It was all done just for pure aesthetics to avoid using the usual plastics we get to see in many modern engine compartments. It’s a winning move too.
Another interesting detail to notice on the body of the new Miata is the way the taillights were installed. Mazda positioned them as inboard as the law will allow, which helps make the car’s hips look even wider than they really are. That’s a smart move, to be honest, and it actually pays out.
The biggest disappointment is the fact that you can’t get a different color for the soft top other than the classic black choice that everyone goes to for some reason. While the previous gen Miata offered a tan Spicy Mocha top on the Gran Touring model and made a huge difference in how the car was perceived overall.
