2016 Mazda CX-5 Facelift Rendered

A little over a week ago, we showed you the first spy photos of the Mazda CX-5 facelift and discussed the various changes this Japanese automaker plans to make. It seems graphic manipulator Remco Meulendijk was paying attention, since he quickly whipped up this rendering to show what the updated SUV will look like once the camouflage is ripped off next year.

Renderings are a tricky business – one wrong modification and you've ruined the whole thing – but Remco has captured the essence of what we were saying very well. New headlights will give the CX-5 a different identity, together with an updated grille. Mazda is clearly conserving its current design language, but is also updating it with the elements created for the new Demio/2 supermini. Both the headlights and taillights are going to receive an updated look, as will part of the power bumpers. LED strips in the wing mirrors will replace the regular indicators in the front fenders, giving off a cleaner, more premium look.

Not all the changes planned for the CX-5 are clear at the moment. However, fine-tuning of the suspension and engines will likely take place. Whatever the case, the CX-5 is a crucial model for Mazda, their second-best seller in fact. Despite being shorter, its well engineered cabin was larger than the CX-7 before Mazda decided to stop making it. Without the right improvements, however, its share of the compact SUV market could fall pray to the multitude of rivals coming out in the coming years, especially the German-made second-generation Tiguan.
