2016 Mazda BT-50 Facelift Unveiled in Patent Images – Photo Gallery

When it comes to simple, honest-to-God utes, the Ford Ranger and Holden Colorado are up there near the top of the preference list in the Land Down Under. After the T6-gen Ranger got its long-awaited facelift in March, the time has come for its technically identical 2016 Mazda BT-50 brother to shine.

By US standards, the BT-50 is a mid-size pickup truck and with the facelift we can see passenger car range styling cues coming through. Gone is the smiling face of yesteryear and in its place we have a more mature KODO – Soul of Motion design language. Following earlier spy pics, the people from Car Advice got their hands on images that clearly tell us what's what.

Slated to arrive in Australia and New Zealand in September, the 2016 Mazda BT-50 facelift is going to be assembled in Rayong, Thailand, just as its sibling with Blue Oval badges. Though the overall shape and size are similar to the pre-facelift, the refreshed BT-50 ups the ante with the welcomed design revisions we can admire in the gallery below. It's a good-looking ute as far as the exterior is concerned.

Other than the new headlamp graphics, the split front grille that separates the grille from the headlights with chrome trim transforms the overall appearance of the Mazda BT-50. Even the sculpted front bumper and mildly redesigned taillamps make a difference for the better. Still, it's a pity we can't see projector headlights, equipment that is available on upper trim levels of the 2015 Ford Ranger.

On the inside, additions will include a Mazda MZD Connect infotainment system on posher trim levels of the BT-50 while the mechanical bits and bobs are expected to be virtually unchanged. Therefore, expect to get 4x2 and 4x4 versions of the ute in 2.2-liter turbo diesel format (118 kW/160 HP and 385 Nm/284 lb-ft) and 3.2-liter turbo diesel guise (147 kW/200 HP and 470 Nm/346 lb-ft).
