The Optima did a lot for Kia in terms of sales volumes. The mid-size sedan was first introduced in 2000, while the current generation has been with us since 2010. And as things stand at Kia these days, the Optima is due to receive a new generation next year.
And this is basically it, aside from the sea of swirly and black camouflage and some special sensors in the cabin. Our carparazzi previously caught the new Kia Optima on film on the Nurburgring and testing in Death Valley, but this time around a pre-production 2016 Kia Optima was spotted testing in Europe.
From the photos we've been sourced with it's clear as day the vehicle is in its final development stage, which is a good thing considering less than a year remains until the fourth-gen Optima should enter production. Don't know about the trailer attached to the thing, but the Optima can tow stuff as well, albeit not as good as say a Ford Explorer or pickup truck.
In terms of mechanicals, voices hint underpinnings are shared with the 2015 Hyundai Sonata sedan, meaning added rigidity and less weight than before. In terms of powerplants, expect a 2.5-liter and a 2-liter turbo mill under the hood, slightly revised for less CO2 emission, better fuel economy and a small hike in power. A 1.7-liter diesel is expected to be offered down in Europe, together with your usual suite of six-speed stick shift and automatic transmissions.
But the real game changer here is represented by the evolutionary design of the 2016 Kia Optima. As such, the model will boast with sharp lines inspired from the all-new Kia Sorento, as well as an interior with more upmarket credentials, more equipment as standard and better fit & finish. Moreover, there's a humongous touchscreen infotainment system fitted to the spied pre-production vehicle, so here's hope we'll also get more technology with the new Optima.
