After seeing the European version of the all-new Kia Optima a few days ago, it's time for the US-exclusive mid-size sedan. There are a few cosmetic differences here and there, but the Korean car is now a global product, a handsome one at that.
The real headline with the all-new 2016 Optima is that it's available with not one but two turbocharged engines. No, we aren't talking about any diesel to compete with the TDI, but about a downsized mill you may know from the Veloster. A 1.6-liter with forced induction is available and comes mated as standard to a seven-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT). The 1.6-liter will be offered on the LX trim. Pushing out 178 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 195 lb-ft (264 Nm) of torque at just 1,500 rpm, the turbo should be enough for most people.
However, just like its Sonata sister, the Optima is also available with a 2-liter turbo generating 245 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 260 lb-ft of torque (353 Nm). More basic models like the LX and EX come with the old 2.4-liter GDI four-cylinder, available on the LX and EX models. At 185 horsepower, it's more powerful than the 1.6 turbo but delivers the goods at higher rpm. Both engines have been retuned for fuel economy and better performance and drivability with a six-speed Sportmatic automatic transmission taking care of the gears.
The all-new Optima is Kia’s first application of Bi-Xenon HID headlights with available Dynamic Bending Lamps and High Beam Assist. Around the back, LED taillights inspired by the larger Cadenza premium model are a nice touch.
The Optima's wheelbase is 10 mm longer compared to the model it replaces, but it also comes with an increased width (by 25 mm) and height. As a result, the cabin should feel roomier. The materials used are of better quality, and the level of soundproofing has increased.
The Optima is Kia’s pilot vehicle for the introduction of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay (late availability). Both will be available at you fingertips through an 8-inch touchscreen.

New Design and Upmarket Cabin
The old Optima still looks bold and original, but the latest model is in a class of its own. Style is usually down to personal preference, so there's not much point in discussing it. However, we couldn't help notice the new front fascia, dominated by a wide grille and plenty of chrome trim. We also like the swept-back headlights and the taut metal over the wheel arches. The all-new Optima is Kia’s first application of Bi-Xenon HID headlights with available Dynamic Bending Lamps and High Beam Assist.
