The next-generation Jeep Wrangler, which is scheduled for a 2016 launch, could lose its popular solid axles as Chrysler is looking to offer a lighter crossover, Automotive News reports.
According to Jeep boss Mike Manley, the next Wrangler could receive an independent suspension system instead of the current coil-link setup. Such a decision is likely to upset Wrangler loyalists, as aftermarket customization will no longer be possible, but Manley pledges he won’t “screw up”.

"We're already in an environment where it's a challenge to produce a vehicle in that way, and it's going to get harder," he said. "What I can tell you is that the vehicle is absolutely fundamental to our DNA, and it's going to become progressively harder to make sure that the vehicle meets all of the standards that are required for it."

“Frankly, I know that if I screw up the next Wrangler, then I probably wouldn’t be able to leave my house for a long time,” Manley added.
