When it went on sale in early summer 2014, Hyundai Motor America made it clear that the Tucson Fuel Cell isn't for sale. People that want to drive the hydrogen-powered SUV can only lease it, with around 70 units of the zero-emissions breed leased to date.
For the 2016 Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell, the South Korean manufacturer focused on making the eco-friendly crossover more appealing to potential owners. Available from $499 per month including unlimited free hydrogen refueling and maintenance, the 2016 Tucson Fuel Cell adds the HomeLink connectivity.
This bit of equipment allows Tucson Fuel Cell owners to open and close their garage doors, security gates, as well as control home lighting systems via a button on the rearview mirror.
Bear Grylls fans rejoice! The mirror now features a digital compass too. In addition to the HomeLink system and digital compass, the 2016 Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell boasts two new exterior color options. Other than the pictured Winter White, customers can now lease the green machine in Hydro Blue and Chromium Silver.
Curious why the Tucson Fuel Cell can be driven for $499/month for a 36-month term with a $2,999 down payment? Mike O'Brien, vice prez of corporate and product planning at Hyundai USA, explains: “When we spoke with customers about fuel cell vehicles, many wondered about the cost of hydrogen. To ease those concerns as the hydrogen refueling network builds out, we decided that covering this cost for these early adopters was appropriate, and consistent with how we like to treat our customers.”
With a driving range of about 265 miles (426 km) and refueling time similar to the gasoline-powered Hyundai Tucson, the zero-emissions model makes sense in California. Cali is the only State where Hyundai leases the Tucson Fuel Cell thanks to the development of the fuel cell station infrastructure.
The automaker's US division informs that it's planning to expand Tucson Fuel Cell availability to "other regions of the U.S. consistent with the accelerating deployment of hydrogen refueling stations."
