2016 Hyundai Sonata Gets "Top Safety Pick+" Rating from the IIHS

You can say that the 2016 Hyundai Sonata passed one of the automotive industry’s most demanding vehicle crash tests with flying colors, as the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) granted the South Korean’s latest sedan with the Top Safety Pick+ award.

This prestigious award helps consumers select vehicles that offer the highest level of crash protection.

Occupant safety, above all other things, is the single most important factor when designing and engineering Hyundai vehicles. Receiving this award, given the increasing demands of the test, is a testament to our emphasis on safety at every price point, and is a point of pride for every Hyundai associate,” Mike O’Brien, vice president, corporate and product planning of Hyundai Motor America, stated.

As the automotive world evolves very rapidly, the need for safety is now even bigger, so the requirements for Top Safety Pick+ were toughened for 2016.

To qualify, winners must, on the one hand, earn good ratings in each of the five crashworthiness tests, such as the small overlap test, moderate overlap test, side and roof strength and head restrain tests. On the other hand, they need to have an available front crash prevention system which could bring the car an advanced or superior rating.

According to Adrian Lund, IIHS President, “While the Sonata received the same Top Safety Pick+ award in 2015, the vehicle’s structure was improved to raise the small overlap front ratings from acceptable to good. With a more rigorous test environment for 2016, receiving another Top Safety Pick+ award acknowledges Hyundai’s commitment to occupant safety by consistently engineering strength and quality improvements into its vehicles.

For the latest model, Hyundai made the Automatic Emergency Braking system available to models previously equipped with Forward Collision Warning and added even more safety equipment, including Lane Departure Warning, Smart Cruise Control with stop/start feature, rear parking sensors, Blind Spot Detection with Rear Cross-traffic Alert and Lane Change Assist.
