2016 Hyundai Sonata Adds 1.7 Diesel and 1.6 Turbo Engines

From 1985 onwards, the Sonata became the mid-size sedan staple as far as Hyundai is concerned. Over the course of six generations, the Korean model got better and better, but it’s the seventh generation that is a true global model. With the addition the PHEV model, 1.6L Turbo and Diesel, the Korea-spec 2016 Hyundai Sonata range now consists of 7 engines.

The lineup starts with the 2016 Hyundai Sonata 2-liter gasoline engine, churning out 168 HP and 6,500 rpm and 201 Nm (148 lb-ft) of torque at 4,800 rpm. Then there’s the turbocharged 2-liter Turbo GDI engine, with 245 horsepower and 353 Nm (260 lb-ft) on tap.

Moving on to the 2016 Hyundai Sonata Plug-In Hybrid, the South Korea-spec model will be mirrored by a US-spec Sonata PHEV slated to go on sale early this fall. The powertrain of this eco-conscious Sonata is made of a 2-liter GDI (156 horsepower and 189 Nm or 139 lb-ft) naturally aspirated engine and an electric motor that is good for 68 horsepower and 205 Nm (151 lb-ft).

If there’s fuel economy you’re after, the U2 1.7 turbo diesel lump is just what the doctor ordered. On the Korea-spec mode, the 2016 Hyundai Sonata Diesel boasts 141 horsepower, 340 Nm (250 lb-ft) of torque, and a fuel economy of 6 liters per 100 km (39.2 US mpg) only if the engine is mated to a 7-speed auto.

As for the equally important 1.6 T-GDI turbocharged engine, this mill is good for 180 HP and a sufficiently meaty 264 Nm (194 lb-ft) from 1,500 to 4,500 rpm. According to Hyundai, this petrol-burning motor has been developed in 52 months at a cost of 69.5 billion Korean won (roughly 6.17 million US dollars). The 1.6 Turbo GDI is can also be paired to the all-new DCT 7-speed double-clutch automatic transmission.
