The Honda HR-V has been available in Japan since late 2013 as the Vezel. However, the European crash testing organization Euro NCAP has just released its findings.
Described as an "urban SUV," the HR-V combines elements from the Jazz subcompact, the big CR-V and a few coupe hints. Many young families across the European continent will buy it. We're pleased to report that they will be safe, given that Euro NCAP deems the HR-V worthy of its maximum 5-star safety rating.

The Honda baby SUV was good, but not excellent in the tests conducted by Euro NCAP. For example, most areas showed good or adequate protection in the frontal "offset" crash. Still, the front seat had "marginal" whiplash protection, while the rear ones were great.

Honda seems to have stuffed a lot of metal bracing into the doors, because the dummies were perfectly fine in both lateral impact scenarios. It's not like most family crossover drivers will crash sideways into a pole at 32 km/h (19 mph), but they should be fine if they do.

The HR-V scored maximum points for its protection of the 18-month baby dummy in the dynamic impact tests. In the frontal offset test, forward movement of the three-year dummy, sat in a forward-facing restraint, was not excessive, but points were deducted. If you plan on using a child seat in this car, we strongly recommend that you check out the detailed report attached. It explains what types of seats are safe to install and where.

The 2016 Honda HR-V has earned a five-star rating overall in the federal New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) crash-testing. However, its results weren't quite top-tier.

In frontal crash testing (35 mph into a fixed barrier), they found that the HR-V was only able to achieve four stars for both male-size occupants in the driver’s seat and female-size passengers. The HR-V hasn’t been rated yet by the other organization that conducts US crash testing, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) or the Japanese safety body.
