2016 Honda Civic Coupe Revealed with Bigger Cabin, Turbo Engine

As promised, Honda has taken the wraps off an all-new Civic compact coupe today. While it's not mind-blowingly different from the 2016 Civic sedan, this two-door has everything it needs to make a statement.

For now, we only get the vanilla versions, as the Si and Type R are still under development. That means choices with a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated base engine and a 1.5-liter turbo are being presented. The stick is only available on the 2.0, while a CVT continues to be the automatic of choice.

Output numbers and fuel economy ratings are nearly identical to those of the Civic 4-door. The atmospheric models pump out 158 hp and 138 lb-ft (186 Nm) of torque, meaning this is still the most powerful entry-level compact coupe on the market. As for the new turbo, it gives you 174 hp and 162 lb-ft (219 Nm) of torque.

Perhaps the true story here isn't the styling or the engines but the cabin. The old Civic Coupe looked like it was designed by boy racers on the inside, but this one is premium goods. You also get a seven-inch Display Audio infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility.

By lengthening the wheelbase, Honda has made the new Civic Coupe roomier as well. Rear legroom has increased by over five inches, and there's an extra 8.4 cubic feet of interior space. That's like adding the trunk of a subcompact.

Honda didn't go into too much detail regarding specs, but it did say the car would come standard with automatic headlights and LED daytime running lights. At the back, LED taillights and a fastback trunk compete for your attention. But the skirt is underwhelming, partly because there's not enough exhaust back there.

"We continue on our epic 10th-generation Civic journey with the sportiest, most sophisticated and tech-savvy Civic Coupe yet," said Jeff Conrad, senior vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. and general manager of the Honda Division. "I think our customers are going to be utterly surprised by what this new Coupe delivers in terms of refinement, safety, efficiency and fun-to-drive performance."
