There's no doubt that MINI has made a more practical, better looking Clubman hatchback. However, by increasing the length, this quirky car now has to compete directly with one of the best front-wheel-drive Germans cars ever created.
We've been discussing the GTI all year. After all, the hot hatch icon is turning 40 and gets a lot of attention. Not all the generations were great, and the Mk6 that went out of production after the 2014 model year didn't have enough torque and understeered like a pig. But the newer 2015/2016 car is all-new and better in many ways than the MINI.
Yes, we are already jumping to conclusions, but we already knew what was going to happen ever before checking out the comparison from Auto Guide. While both these cars use 2.0-liter turbocharged engines, the GTI packs up to 220 horsepower while the MINI has 190 and a lot less torque.
DSG gearboxes have received a lot of criticism for their jerkiness and lack of reliability, but the one in the GTI is the best of its kind, while the 8-speed automatic used by the Clubman Cooper S is not the same 8-speed in your BMW.
As for practicality, the GTI has more of it, thanks to its more conventional approach to hatchback design. We're pretty sure that the Clubman will feel really special from behind the wheel, but the tradeoff is that you pay more, a lot more. Not only is the trunk smaller, but the split-opening trunk is not as practical and restricts rear visibility.
Regarding price, the British car is more expensive, reaching over $36,000 as tested. The GTI is also expensive when you add the Performance Pack and other goodies, but you get a better overall package. Overall, if you just want to have fun, we think the friskier Ford Focus ST should also be on your list before making a buying decision.
