Introduced in 2010 and facelifted for the 2013 model year, the current-generation Ford Taurus is on its way to retirement, with a redesigned model to be unveiled sometime next year.
Little is known about the next-generation full-size sedan, but a new report coming from Edmunds says the new Taurus will ride on a front-wheel drive platform sourced from the Fusion.
Naturally, the chassis will be lengthened and widened to accommodate the larger Taurus, which will be lighter, faster and more fuel efficient compared to its predecessor. The latter goal will be achieved with help from a nine-speed automatic, according to an industry source familiar with the matter.
“The problem with today’s Taurus is that it is overweight and even the high performance SHO is not really competitive. With all the power from the V6 EcoBoost, it is pretty hard to overcome the amount of mass that the SHO has to move,” the unnamed source told Edmunds.
There are no details as to what engines choices for will be offering on the 2016 Taurus, but expect an array of four-cylinder and V6 EcoBoost units.
The 2014 Ford Taurus can be ordered with either a standard 3.5-liter TiVCT V6 and an optional 2.0-liter EcoBoost. A twin-turbo 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 is available on the SHO model only. The sedan is priced from $26,780.
