Launched back in 2010, the current Ford Explorer changed not only its looks but also its class migrating from mid-size sport utility vehicle to full-size crossover. For 2015, the company is preparing something new, something our spy photographers caught on camera nearly camo free.

Judging by the looks of things we might be in for more of a facelift than a big change next year. The 2016 MY version was seen earlier roaming with heavy camouflage on but nobody was sure what we were looking at.

Today, the car was spotted up close with almost all the camouflage removed and we can tell that the front and rear ends will get some new design cues. Up front, the fog lights have a completely different look while the grilles and the bumper seem to be following the same lines as the current model. The headlights seem to be sporting a new take but in their case as well it’s more of an evolution rather than something completely new.

On the sides the changes are limited to the lower part of the doors, the same character lines decorating the car while the rear end also seems to be pointing out to a more evolutionary take on the new model. The taillights especially seem to be borrowing the same general outline.

New engines alongside others carried over from the current generation

The tech bits should tickle your fancy if you’re a fan of the Explorer. The new EcoBoost 2.3-liter 4-cylinder engine should make it under the bonnet of the 2016 model, replacing the old 2-liter 4-cylinder unit. Furthermore, the same output as on the Mustang can be expected, rated at 310 BHP and 230 lb-ft (312 Nm) of torque.

Of course, the 2.7-liter EcoBoost from the F-150 might also be a possibility while the 3.5-liter V6 unit that’s being sold at the moment as the base unit should be kept on for a couple more years. As far as transmission options go, a six-speed automatic should come standard now along with a choice of front- and all-wheel drive options.

Camo could point out to aluminum usage

Ford has been adamant on making its cars lighter by any means and the F-150 is a statement to that. Heavy aluminum usage means cars can shed some pounds and return better numbers.

The same is expected to happen here and the camouflage used for the entire front end, covering the bonnet and the fenders might be a pointer in this direction. Therefore a drop of 200-300 lbs could happen.

Facing rivals such as the Chevrolet Traverse and Dodge Durango, the pricing should remain around the $31,000 range including the better interior and upgraded specs. The 2016 version should come out in early 2015.
