We knew Ford was going to go platinum on the 2016 Ford Explorer from last year, but we didn't have all the details. That's been fixed now, as FoMoCo revealed addition info on the Platinum version for the best-selling SUV in the US.
Upgrades have been operated both inside and outside, so let's start with the cabin, where changes are part of a longer list.
Passengers inside the 2016 Ford Explorer Platinum will be greeted by new multi-adjustable front seats that have been wrapped in Nirvana leather with micro-perforation.
There's also a special treatment for the ears included, as Ford dropped a 500-watt premium Sony Audio System in their imbued SUV. Moreover, the heated steering wheel boasts a wood and leather trim while the same combination of materials plus aluminum can be found all around the cabin, including on door panels and the instrument panel.
The instrument cluster was fitted with large 10-inch digital screen coupled with analog displays – a premiere for a Ford car.
"Platinum is the ultimate expression of refinement,” said Mike Arbaugh, Ford Explorer chief designer. “This is the most upscale, high-quality interior we’ve ever offered on a Ford vehicle in North America.”
Also, the SUV uses front and rear cameras with washers. Both gizmos come with wide-angle lenses. Not to mention the upper and lower fascia openings close at highway speeds to reduce drag while at low speeds they open to deliver airflow to cool the engine.
Speaking of which, there's a 2.3-liter EcoBoost mill working under the Explorer Platinum's hood, as it produces 280 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 310 lb-ft of torque at 3,000 rpm. Expect the Explorer Platinum to arrive in Ford showrooms starting next month.
