After a very successful launch, the Fiat Tipo is now the best-selling car in Italy. But the budget sedan isn't done yet, as orders can now be placed for the 1.3-liter Multijet II 95 HP version.
We've known about the Tipo 1.3 since the very beginning, but the crucial price information was always missing. While the range starts at €12,500, this diesel model is more expensive at €15,500. However, we still think that's considering the fuel savings that can be expected. That makes this the cheapest Fiat you can buy with this 1.3 Multijet II, undercutting the 500 by 600 euros. However, the Panda has a cheaper 75 PS version... which we'd avoid.
The fuel economy figure has been slightly revised from 4.2 l/100km down to 4.1. Can you get a diesel car for less? Maybe if it's a Dacia Logan. However, the similarly sized Skoda Rapid Spaceback stickers for €19,780 when fitted with a 1.4-liter TDI engine and a 5-speed manual.
If we were in the market for a Fiat Tipo, we'd almost certainly get the 1.3-liter diesel. While the output is the same 95 PS as for the 1.4-liter gasoline motor, there's about 50% more torque available at half the revs. Torque is what you need to get the car moving, so the Multijet engine makes driving the Tipo in traffic easier.
Performance isn't that bad, as the 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) sprint takes 11.7 seconds and the vehicle will reach 180 km/h (112 mph). There are a couple of concessions (drum brakes at the back) made for the sake of cheapness, but you can't argue with a 520-liter trunk for this kind of money.
The engine complies with the latest Euro6 emission regulations and brings several features aimed at reducing emissions. These include the intelligent alternator, which modulates the supply of energy depending on the actual demand and the state of charge of the battery. It also has an optimization of the cooling circuit, which reduces the time needed to warm-up. The injection system can alter the amount of fuel that's being distributed to each cylinder up to eight times per cycle.
