Slated to debut on July 4th, the 2016 Fiat 500 facelift already leaked ahead of its first public outing courtesy of alVolante.it. Spotted on a car trailer en route to the place of unveiling, the updated Cinquecento boasts many minor aesthetic changes.
Starting with the front fascia, the headlamps aren’t round but oval-shaped and their graphics have been changed to look like those that equip the 500L and 500X B-segment crossover. The front bumper has been heavily chiseled, now integrating two chrome trim pieces at the sides. These give the front end of the 2016 Fiat 500 facelift a far more dynamic character.
The chrome trim flanks fog lights with chrome bezels that are accommodated at the extremities of the black plastic lower air intake. As for the radiator grille, the chrome mustache of yesteryear has been phased out for a hexagonal design. Two chrome bars are featured, with the upper bar holding the Fiat badge. Overall, a fairly interesting makeover that brings new life to the 8-year-old Fiat 500. Yes, the Fiat 500 Tipo 312 is an 8-year-old car, that’s not a typo.
Moving on to the rear end of the 2016 Fiat 500 facelift, the lil’ Italian runaround gains LED-accented taillamps with the center of the cluster smoked for added visual drama. The taillamps’ shape hasn’t changed, nor the outline of the hatch door. The rear bumper gains a blingy chrome bar that traverses the bumper’s length, with rear fog lights placed at its extremities. Subtle, but effective we'd say.
First impression? Fairly good. Although Fiat couldn’t develop an all-new generation, this is the best next thing. Even by facelift standards, the exterior of the 2016 Fiat 500 doesn’t disappoint and isn't dated. Through the rear windshield, you can also see the Uconnect infotainment system’s 5-inch touchscreen.
