Built on the GMT K2XX pickup truck platform, the third-gen Chevrolet Silverado started production in 2013 as a 2014 MY. Despite its still fresh exterior design, a Chevrolet spokesperson told Automotive News that the golden bowtie plans some "updates for the Silverado for 2016,” without elaborating.
Why would Chevrolet want to revamp the light duty Silverado (and, most probably, the GMC Sierra too) after just two model years isn’t exactly surprising. Ram Trucks gave the 1500 all-new faces with the Ram Rebel and Ram Laramie Limited. The Blue Oval’s F-150 can be greatly customized as well, leaving GM with a minor disadvantage with the Silverado and Sierra.
When the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado was unveiled two years ago, some voices in the industry and potential pickup truck customers claimed that the design is subpar. It may be new from hood to hitch, but the twin-port grille design with a full-width bumper isn’t exactly all-new for Chevy pickup trucks. Moreover, the vertically stacked headlamps are a modern reinterpretation of the GMT800 Silverado from the 1990s.
According to the previously mentioned publication, Chevrolet dealers were presented last week with the freshened 2016 Chevrolet Silverado at the national dealer meeting in Las Vegas. This scenario seems to hold water, more so if you consider that the 2016 model year show go on sale as soon as late this summer.
What should we expect? Aluminum body panels? Nope. A turbo diesel engine? Nope, the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon will offer the oil-burning 2.8-liter Duramax Diesel. Mechanical improvements aren’t in the 2016 model year’s agenda. On a side note, recent spy photographs of US-bound carparazzi showcase redesigned headlights with LED daytime running lights, revisions to the grille, lower air dam, and taillamps.
