2016 Chevrolet Colorado Rewarded with 2.8-liter Diesel Mill, Towing Capacity Rises to 7,700 Lbs

Chevrolet had something in the bag for the 2016 Colorado truck, so guess what: it's a new diesel engine.

In fact, it's not just any diesel engine, but a 2.8-liter Duramax turbodiesel that will sit under the midsize truck's hood. The unit can offer 181 horsepower at 3,400 rpm and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque at 2,000 rpm.

These figures help with a trailering capacity of 7,700 pounds (3,492 kg) also thanks to a Hydra-Matic 6L50 six-speed auto gearbox. However, this value only stands for the 2WD version, as the 4WD can pull 7,600 pounds (3,447 kg).

“A diesel engine was part of the Colorado’s portfolio plan from the very beginning, meaning the chassis, suspension and other elements of its architecture were engineered to support its capability,” said Scott Yackley, assistant chief engineer. “That means there are no compromises with the Colorado diesel. It offers exceptional capability delivered with a confident feeling of control.”

4WD models also receive a new, electronically controlled two-speed transfer case. According to Chevrolet, the 2.8-liter diesel-drinking mill features an iron cylinder block and aluminum DOHC cylinder head and a common rail direct injection fuel system with B20 bio-diesel capability, among other characteristics.

They also claim the Duramax 2.8L is the cleanest diesel truck engine ever produced by General Motors, and meets some of the toughest U.S. emissions standards, thanks in part to a cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system.

The new Colorado diesel goes on sale this fall, offered in LT and Z71 Crew Cab models, with 2WD or 4WD, and a sticker $3,730 bigger than a comparably equipped 3.6L V6 model.
