When Chevrolet revealed the 2016 Camaro back in May with the obligatory pomp and circumstance, the manufacturer forgot to disclose one important detail about its newest pony - how much it weighs. Happily, however, the real world weight figures are in for the V6- and V8-powered Camaro models.
Thanks to the recent lifting of the embargo on 2016 Chevrolet Camaro test drives, we can now report the real world weights of the sixth-generation breed. Do bear in mind that these are real world weight figures, not the curb weight. The official numbers will be published in a few weeks on the automaker's website, so the real weight figures will have to suffice for now.

From the test drives of Motor Trend (1LT V6 with the RS package and 1SS V8 with NPP) and Car&Driver (2SS with the NPP exhaust system and magnetorheological dampers), we find out what's what. The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro 2SS with some performance bits and bobs weighs in at 3,760 pounds (1,705 kg). Go for the 1SS with the NPP exhaust and it'll be tipping the scales at a remarkable 3,672 lbs or 1,656 kg.

As for the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro V6 in 1LT format with the RS pack, the real world weight sits at 3,461 pounds (1,570 kg). What's missing from this picture? Ah, the weight of the 2-liter turbocharged Camaro.

The reason motoring journalists haven't tested the 2-point-Oh is that the bottom-rung 2016 Camaro will start production early next year. But until that moment comes, how do the V6- and V8-powered Camaro siblings stack up to their arch enemies from the Blue Oval - the Mustang V6 and GT V8?

The short answer to that question is pretty damn well. Compared to the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro's real world weight, the curb weight of the 2016 Ford Mustang is 3,526 lbs (1,599 kg) for the stick shift V6 model and 3,729 lbs (1,691 kg) for the manual GT V8. The all-new Camaro's diet is even more impressive once you vector in this fact - the 2SS tested by Car&Driver was equipped with the fast-shifting 8-speed auto as well.

On an ending note, the soon-to-arrive head-to-head tests versus the Mustang won't fare well for Ford.

UPDATE: according to AutoBlog, the curb weight for the V6 manual in 2LT format is 3,448 lbs or 1,564 kg. The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro 1SS V8 with the 6-speed manual, on the other hand, boasts a curb weight of 3,685 lbs or 1,671 kg. That's a minor improvement over the Mustang GT's 3,705 lbs or 1,680 kg.
