General Motors has issued a recall targeting models across multiple brands, with the campaign being connected to an electrical problem. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the affected vehicles include the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro, Malibu, Silverado, as well as the GMC Sierra.
The recall affects a total of 139 vehicles, with the audio system being suspected of a fault that would cause the cars to miss the delivery of aural warnings related to important safety aspects.

"The radio may intermittently fail to provide an audio warning when the key has been left in the ignition and the door is opened or when the driver does not fasten their seatbelt," a statement issued by the NHTSA reads.

The units targeted by the campaign fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) number 114 (regarding Theft Protection) and/or number 208 (having to do with Occupant Crash Protection).

The issue surfaced randomly, becoming obvious during a fix for a different problem at GM's Fort Wayne Assembly Plant, as the company told the NHTSA. To be more precise, an employee noticed the vehicle didn't emit any aural signals on startup.

The automaker opened an investigation into the matter in October 2015, with the conclusion being that certain vehicles were fitted with incorrect radio software. There were also other vehicles that didn't get the mandatory software update before being delivered to their customers.

Chevrolet and GMC dealers will update the radio software on the targeted vehicles, but the company has not set a date for the campaign yet. Owners can contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782, with the number for this recall being 15808.

Owners may also reach out to the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or head over to safecar.gov, where the NHTSA campaign number is 16V084000.
