Remember the last version of Bumblebee from Transformers 4? Not surprisingly, the all-new 2016 Camaro that's coming out this year has its eyes. How do we know that? Because this pre-production prototype headlight unit has leaked out online and indicates Chevrolet could be hyping us for an official debut as early as the New York Auto Show in April.
Reports from closed circuit events where the Camaro has already been shown indicate the coupe is 10 to 15% lighter than its predecessor. Like the Ford Mustang, the entry-level model will have a four-cylinder turbo engine, like the Saturn Sky (Opel GT) used to. However, it will be a 2-liter unit as opposed to the 2.3-liter used by the 'Stang.
Getting back to the headlight unit at hand, it appeared on eBay, where it was spotted by a Camaro6 user. Certain parts are broken, but we can still make out the general design, which appears to have a transparent section on inner side, where the grille connects. The lights are embossed with the lettering “Camaro”, a further indication that they belong to our next-gen car.
The eBay seller seems to specialize in headlight units that are either aftermarket or have flaws. This could just be a discarded test part from Chevrolet… or an elaborate Chinese copy. Either way, it doesn't look like the Camaro will offer too much in the way of LED lighting. The unit also has a sticker on it which reads "A1BC". Some have speculated the letters mean Alpha, 1st generation based on this platform, B for Coupe (GM internal code) and Chevrolet.
We expect the base 2-liter Camaro to make its way into European showrooms with an out somewhere in the region of 272 hp and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm). There should also be a 3.6-liter V6 motor borrowed from the Cadillac ATS and an LT1 V8 with about 450 horsepower.
