With the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro, General Motors flexed its muscles to develop one of - if not - the best pony car of the moment. For added visual drama, the Camaro Six also likes to smoke its rear wheels, leaving a towering cloud of thick smoke in its wake.
As part of Chevrolet's Find New Roads Trip, the peeps over at Motor Authority got their hands on a 2016 Camaro SS for 36 hours. While the entry-level 1LT and its 2.0 turbo 4-banger is priced at $26,695, the 2SS is a $42,295 affair. Thankfully, though, the Hyper Blue Metallic paint job (pictured) is a free-of-charge pick.
The 20-inch split 5-spoke Silver-painted aluminum wheels retail for $200. On top of that, Motor Authority's 2SS also comes with the $1,495 GM 8L90 Hydra-Matic 8-speed automatic transmission, making it a $43,990 machine. That's a helluva lot more than the starting price of a 2016 Ford Mustang GT Premium Fastback ($34,294), but it's worth it.
Brembo brakes with 4-piston front and rear calipers, a limited-slip diff, dedicated cooling systems for the diff, tranny, and engine oil, Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3-season run-flat tires, and many electronic driving aids are the specialties of the 2016MY Camaro 2SS. There are plenty more reasons why the 6.2-liter LT1 V8-powered 2016 Camaro is a far better proposition compared to the FoMoCo pony. One of those is a 12.21-second 1/4-mile time, making it 0.3 seconds faster than the Mustang GT with the 6-speed automatic.
Another one is the fuel economy: 17 mpg city (13.8 l/100 km) and 28 mpg highway (8.4 l/100 km), which is 1 mpg city and 3 mpg highway better than the Mustang. The ultimate argument, however, is the Chevrolet's smoking habit. Soooo, can the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS and its 455 horsepower V8 motor do a proper burnout? Yes, yes it can. Producing billowy smoke is not as scientific as the EPA-rated fuel economy, but these are the things we want from an entertaining car such as the all-new Camaro. God bless America!
