The second generation of the Cadillac mid-size crossover SUV may have been around since July 2009, but its appeal is still going strong. Heck, even Mary Barra declared last month that her family is about to “purchase a Cadillac SRX.” Still, Mary didn’t mention if it will be a 2015 or 2016 model year.
Regarding the 2016 Cadillac SRX, prepare to say goodbye to that nameplate and welcome the 2016 Cadillac XT5. According to insider intel, that’s the moniker that’ll be used for the third-gen. MotorTrend thinks that “the next New York show” is the place of unveiling and that we should expect it to “adopt the new XT_ naming structure.” Fingers crossed! So...

...besides the spy photographs below, what is known up to this moment about the 2016 XT5? First and foremost, Cadillac helmsman Johan de Nysschen declared in January that the SRX is going to be rejuvenated “later this year” with a major exterior design overhaul. Our intel hints that the gray-haired Theta Premium (GMT267) platform will be ditched in favor of the brand spanking new GM C1XX platform.

Word on the street is the C1XX will come in two flavors - normal and long wheelbase, retaining the front or all-wheel drive architecture of the GMT267 that currently underpins the SRX. To boot, the New York-bound 2016 model year of the mid-size CUV is expected to be a 7-seater when kitted with optional 3rd-row seats.

We also hear that underpinnings and the cabin layout will be adopted by the new-generation GMC Acadia and Chevrolet Traverse. Slated to be offered with a choice of four and six-banger turbocharged engines, it’s anybody’s guess if the 2016 Cadillac XT5 will also get the much-rumored GM nine-speed auto. Super Cruise automated driving aids are in the cards too, while production will be moved to Spring Hill, Tennessee.
