2016 Cadillac CTS-V Spied Preparing for Nurburgring Attack

Chrysler may have stolen the muscle car show these days with its Challenger Hellcat and spied Charger Hellcat, but we mustn’t forget GM is working on some new firepower of its own. We’re referring to the 2016 Cadillac CTS-V, which has now landed at the Nurburgring.

A pair of 2016 CTS-V prototypes were spied walking their heavily camouflaged bodies in the proximity of the Green Hell, with the actual bashing set to kick off tomorrow. Seeing the CTS-V at the Nordschleife is as natural as possible, given the fact that the now old CTS-V was quite a handler.

In fact, we remember one sunny day in 2009 when Bob Lutz, GM’s CEO at the time, challenged journalists to bring on the competition to the Monticello Motor Club. None of the competing automakers wanted to battle it out with the Caddy, but people brought in private cars. Long story short, the CTS-V beat an M3, a Lancer Evo X, an M5, an RS4, as well as a Jaguar XF.

Aside from the M5, these models weren’t exactly competitors and the winning CTS-V wasn’t driven by Lutz, but by another GM exec and yet the conclusion was pretty clear - the Caddy knew a thing or two about the twisties.

As for what will motivate the 2016 CTS-V, so far the vehicle seems powered by... mystery. There are two possible versions here. The first sees the CTS-V gifted with the Corvette Z06’s supercharged V8, with output expected to play in the 600 hp area.

Nonetheless, if we take a close look at those massive side air intakes on the front apron, we notice what appears to be a pair of air-to-air intercoolers. The Z06’s blown motor holds its intercooler between the cylinder banks, so we may be dealing with a twin-turbo setup here. The most likely version seems to be the Cadillac Elmiraj concept car’s twin turbocharged 4.5-liter V8.

We expect the 2016 Cadillac CTS-V prototypes to have some Nurburgring asphalt for lunch tomorrow, so perhaps we’ll get some power clues from those quad exhaust tips.
