Buick teased us last week, telling us that there’s a new car coming to the Chinese market and releasing a photo of it last week. Now that the Shanghai Auto Show is in full swing, we got to see it first hand and we’re not impressed.
Built by the GM-Shanghai joint venture in China, the Verano doesn’t really feel like it wears the Buick badge up front or in the back. The fit and finish could’ve been better and the same could be said about the materials used inside.
Compared to the previous model however, it’s a step up. The Verano was kept out of the Chinese market so far and the one we’re looking at here is going to wear a different name in the Asian country: Weilang.
Two four-cylinder petrol engines will be animating this sedan with power ranges going from 118 HP for the 1.5-liter to 170 for the same engine but turbocharged. As far as gearbox choices go, there will be a manual 6-speed unit available for the former and a 7-speed DCT unit for the latter.
According to GM, the most powerful version will be benefiting from a drag coefficient of just 0.27 and start/stop technology. Combined with forced induction, this means that the new Verano will sip 6.1 liters of fuel per 100 km (38.5 mpg US) which will turn it into the segment leader.
Prices will range from CNY135,000 to CNY185,000 ($21,530 to $29,510 at today’s exchange rates) which is just about right for a brand new car wearing the Buick logo.
