Habemus pricing! That’s what it would sound like if we were to mix the phrase said when the new Pope is elected and the news that hit today. Yes, we have the pricing for the X5 xDrive40e, finally, and its a bit of news that we’ve been waiting for quite some time now, a process as nerve-racking as the one of electing the new Pope.
The pricing for the first plug-in hybrid sold by BMW under its main brand (excluding the i sub-brand) will start at $63,095 in the US including the new Destination and Handling tax that was raised to $995. That makes the xDrive40e the second to most expensive model in the current range.

Of course, that title will still go to the xDrive50i model that starts at $71,695 but it’s quite surprising that the hybrid is more expensive than the diesel xDrive35d model starting at $58,695. One would presume that if you want to make a model popular, you’ll be selling it for a lower price. Sure, the amount of technology onboard the xDrive40e is impressive and deserves a certain price tag but how much is too much? Well, let’s take a look at what the spec sheet says.

The powertrain is made up of a 2-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged mill making 245 HP and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque together with an electric motor making 113 HP and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque. Unfortunately, together, they can only deliver 308 HP (313 PS) and 332 lb-ft (450 Nm) of torque at most.

In EV mode, the X5 can cover up to 13 miles (21 km) according to the EPA and the preliminary fuel economy estimates place it at 55 MPGe. This is definitely not a car that will be doing drag races too soon, but you might be interested to learn that the 0-60 mph (96 km/h) sprint is done in 6.5 seconds.

The production of the first 2016 BMW X5 xDrive40e models will begin this August with deliveries in various showrooms scheduled for this fall.
