The biggest, meanest and most powerful new kid on the BMW block is definitely the 2016 BMW X5 M. You could include the X6 M here too as the two share all of their underpinnings. That’s because they have the most powerful engines BMW ever made under their bonnets, an upgraded version of the 4.4-liter V8 twin-turbo mills we’ve been getting used to.
They are now making 575 HP and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) of torque in standard guise, a noticeable increase compared to what the older X5 M and X6 M cars used to put down at 555 HP and 680 Nm (501 lb-ft) of torque.

The two SUVs (or SAV respectively SAC if you’re into BMW lingo) are also absolutely impressive in size, tipping the scales at 2.3 tons each. That doesn’t seem to matter that much though when it comes to performance.

The straight line acceleration is absolutely incredible, the mastodons posting 4.2-second runs to 100 km/h (62 mph) despite their size and weight. What’s even more impressive is that those numbers are achieved in standard guise, almost every time, due to the xDrive all-wheel drive transmission and the new 8-speed Steptronic gearbox.

However, could an X5 M keep up with a proper sports car that has more power and a better aerodynamic shape? Well, to find out, we have the video posted below of a drag race between the Bimmer and a 647 HP Corvette ZR1.

While the specs look completely in favor of the American, things didn’t go so smoothly, especially due to the driver’s skills or, better said, lack of.
