2016 BMW X4 M40i Pricing to Start at $57,800, Aims at the Porsche Macan S

The BMW X4 M40i was unveiled a while back, and although we were impressed with its straight-line performance, we still wondered what kind of price would be asked for it. According to recent info, the pricing for the M Performance automobile will start at $57,800 in the US, which is pretty steep.

Of course, apart from the improved engine and the suspension setup, the car will also come with a plethora of equipment included as standard, as is the case with all M Performance cars. That will contain the M Sport package, which costs $1,900 alone, as well as other bits and pieces for the interior.

The M Sport seats with their Alcantara bolsters and hex textile centers will be included as well, as will xenon headlamps and automatic air conditioning. That’s not what’s going to sell this car, though, but its performance.

Under the hood lies a reworked version of the N55 unit found on xDrive35i models, making up to 360 HP and 465 Nm (343 lb-ft) of torque. Those figures, along with the 8-speed automatic gearbox and all-wheel-drive system, allow the M40i to reach 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standstill in 4.8 seconds, which is faster than its more expensive main rival. Care to guess what car we’re talking about? The newly released Porsche Macan GTS, of course.

In the US, the Porsche alternative starts at $67,200 and has a 3-liter twin-turbo V6 under the hood, which also develops 360 HP. Even so, the Macan GTS accelerates to the benchmark 100 km/h (62 mph) speed in 5.2 seconds, or 5 seconds when fitted with the Sport Chrono package, which will set you back another couple thousand bucks.

Of course, in terms of handling, the two models are in different leagues, but then again, the X4 M40i appeals to those who just want to be fast from a red light and will probably never use it on a track. For that, the new X4 version should be pretty good.

There’s also a rumor that the model will be making its world premiere in front of a live audience in Detroit next year, alongside the new M2. Deliveries will kick off in April 2016.
