The BMW X1 doesn't have that many secrets to hide. Everybody knows that it's making a controversial move from a RWD platform to the same UKL architecture that underpins the new latest MINI models and the 2 Series Active Tourer.
However, the latest spyshots we received from Germany provide us with the very first glimpse of the new X1's interior. This shows remarkable similarities with the 2er AT and the 1 Series sedan we scooped recently. It likely means that all of the many BMW models based on the UKL platform will have the same interior bits.

Compared to the current X1, the Mk2 has a roomier cabin. There is not only more room, thanks to the transversely mounted engine, but also more stowage spaces. For example, there's a large stowage space behind the gear shift lever.

The buttons of the X1 are very large, which should make pressing them with gloves possible, ideal for people living in colder countries. The layout is simple and intuitive. There's no digital speedometer on the new X1, but the central display is larger than on the current model.

Fresh engines

The X1 is undoubtedly one of BMW's best ideas for average buyers. However, most of its current engines will feel rough and unrefined compared to the latest B-family mills. Just like on the Active Tourer, they will include 1.5 and 2-liter mills with 3 or 4 cylinders. All will be turbocharged and should deliver class-leading economy and emissions numbers.

Most buyers will go for the 2-liter diesels on the xDrive18d and xDrive20d, which should boast 150 and 190 PS. However, the latest petrol engines are going to be almost as efficient to run. Gearbox options should include a standard 6-speed manual, the 6-speed auto from the MINI and on higher-spec cars an 8-speed auto from Aisin Seiki Co.

We expect that a hybrid version of the X1 is on the way as well, though it has yet to be spotted in the wild. Borrowing from the i family's tech, it could put the Audi A3 e-tron to shame with over 250 horsepower.

BMW's M boss recently spoke out, saying there will not be any FWD-based M cars. So there isn't an X1 M on the way. However, the regular X1 models should pack plenty of power. BMW are even going to make a chopper version called the X2. Like the X6, it should be slightly stiffer, more dynamic.

The second-generation BMW X1 is expected to make its debut on home turf during 2015's Frankfurt Motor Show.
