This weekend the 24-Hour Spa-Francorchamps race took place in Belgium and BMW claimed its 22nd overall victory in the history of this event. Three BMW Z4 GT3 cars were placed in the top ten by the end and that’s an impressive display, to say the least.
However, the Germans already made up their mind and they announced a while back that they would be replacing the current racer with a modified version of the M6. After showing us some enticing photos of the M6 GT3 in camouflage, BMW refused to offer more insight into it.

Our spy photographers were on the spot this weekend and managed to gain access to the car and snap some photos. While it’s still heavily camouflaged, the photos do show us how extensive the aerodynamic work done on it is.

The new hardcore M racer will be replacing the Z4 and it will do so in all events the Motorsport division is involved in. That means that we will get a GT3 and GTE version nonetheless. The differences between the two lie in the aerodynamics mostly.

Under the bonnet, we’ll have the same 4.4-liter V8 from the road-going model but it will be modified to abide by the FIA rules. That means it will be downgraded to make around 500 HP instead of 560 HP. That might seem like a huge cut but considering that the race version will tip the scale at a little over one ton, it’s going to be incredibly fast.

Other changes include dry sump lubrication, a transaxle drive concept, six-speed sequential gearbox and a tuned chassis to allow the M6 actually to win races. Until we get more info on the exact performances of the car, we’ll have to settle with these spy pics of it under heavy camouflage.
