2016 BMW M2 Spotted Testing on the ‘Ring in Production Guise

BMW is apparently relentlessly testing the upcoming BMW F87 M2. After spotting two of the new prototypes on public roads, our spy photographers caught up with another one, this time on the Nurburgring, the place where every sport car gets tested.

Just like before, this car too was dressed in Sakhir Orange and wearing what looks like the production bumpers, fenders and side sills. Furthermore, we can now get a glimpse of what the air intakes up front will look like and they seem a bit different from the ones used on the M4. We guess that’s good news.

Drilled rotors, wider wheels, race tires and the quad tailpipes at the back tell us straight up that this is no ordinary M235i but the hardcore M2 everyone’s waiting for. The M Performance side mirrors will have to do for new, we guess.

The car is scheduled to enter production in Fall 2015 but until then BMW will keep teasing us. What we do know for now is that the engine under the bonnet will be an upgraded version of the N55 unit used on the M235i, with around 370 HP and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque and might be using two turbochargers instead of one.

Of course, since this will be a proper M car, the Motorsport division will make sure its chassis is properly set up as well as the steering, gearbox and suspension. Speaking of which, it’s still a mystery what kind of gearbox these cars will use.

On the M235i, customers get a choice of a 6-speed manual and 8-speed auto but on this one, the latter could be replaced by a 7-speed DCT unit. Whether xDrive will also be available is still debatable but our guess is that BMW will make the M5 the first M car to have all-wheel-drive, in 2017.
