2016 BMW M2 Spotted Testing on the Nurburgring in the Wet

Just a little over two months still stand between us and seeing the new BMW M2 in the metal and we simply can’t take it anymore. That’s especially true when we stumbled upon spyshots of the car being tested in various locations, in production guise. What could possibly hide under that heavy camouflage?

Well, luckily for us and you, we have a couple of sources close to the high wigs in Munich and we already know a thing or two about how the new F87 M2 will turn out, camouflaged or not.

Sure, we can’t tell you exactly how it looks like but even with the psychedelic camo on we can guess the general outlines and they seem generous. Compared to the M235i it’s based on, the M2 seems to be sporting a more aggressive front bumper with bigger air intakes on the sides joined by wider hips at the back to accommodate a probably revised rear axle and wider wheels.

The headlights seem untouched while the kidney grilles seem a bit sharper but the differences up front in this regard should be too big. Round the back it’s a different story as the rear bumper will have to accommodate four tailpipes instead of two and it will have to grow in size a little.

As for the technical details, they remain the same as the last time we reported. An upgraded version of the N55 engine will sit under the bonnet, different from the S55, making around 370 HP and 520 Nm (384 lb-ft) of torque. All of it will go to the rear wheels alone via a 7-speed DCT gearbox according to the latest info coming in from Bavaria. We’re still hoping for a proper 6-speed manual gearbox like on the 1M Coupe but we’re going to wait and see what’s what.

As for the performance, BMW will probably want to keep the M2 away from M4 territory and therefore the small Coupe will probably hit 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standstill in around 4.4 seconds. That won’t be a huge difference and, with prices lower than the bigger M car, the M2 could be a huge hit.

In the meantime, the Germans are making sure it can handle everything, including rain, with a proper testing session on the Nurburgring as the spyshots below suggest.
