2016 BMW M2 Might Have Similar Weight to the M4 - Rumor

It’s a tedious road ahead until we’ll finally get to meet the F87 M2 face to face but we’re hoping that BMW Motorsport’s newest baby will have plenty of tricks up its sleeve to blow our minds. Again.

That’s what happened with the 1M Coupe, the car whose spiritual successor the M2 is supposed to be. However, as it was the case back then, BMW might hold off a bit on the performance side of things, to make sure nobody steps on nobody’s toes.

According to the latest rumors, the Germans might actually sabotage their own product to make sure there’s still enough performance gap between the M2 and the M4. As we were reporting earlier, the 4.3-second time that was going around the internet might put the almighty M4 in trouble on the track.

The thing is, the M2 would be a bit more compact than its bigger brother. If it were to come out with the same weight-saving technology too, it would be dangerously light on its feet and a potential menace.

Sure, the power difference would also be remarkable. According to our inside source, the car will have between 360 and 375 HP at its disposal coming from the upgraded inline 6-cylinder engine under the bonnet and 520 Nm (384 lb-ft) of torque, numbers slightly lower than the S55’s rating.

Even so, with the right weight, the M2 could be that naughty kid on the block that everyone despises and respects at the same time. Other tech bits would also make it a true M car.

Under the skin, the F87 2er will feature new springs, dampers and aluminum bushings for reduced unsprung weight, plus a CFRP propshaft and an Active M Differential that can lock up to 100 percent.

Therefore, even without the CFRP roof and boot lid cover, the new M could turn out to be a couple of kilos lighter than the M4 which is all for the better. Couple that with the lesser weight and we’re looking at a car sitting right where it should, performance-wise. With a good pricing strategy, this would be a hit!
