The passing between the year 2014 and 2015 will forever be remembered by BMW fans as either a big letdown or a big, pleasurable surprise. That’s because it was on December 31st, 2014, when the first images of the upcoming 7 Series flagship were leaked to the web, with no camo whatsoever.
Initially, this one editor was rather disappointed by the design that seemed more like a small update instead of the completely new face we all expected. What I forgot, however, was that BMW will be focusing on the technology and driving characteristics of this car instead of design.
Furthermore, on more than just one occasion it has been proven that cars can look a certain way in photos and completely different in the metal. Therefore, we should definitely wait for the car to be revealed in full before passing judgement.
Apparently, we won’t have to wait a lot as leaks are helping us out a lot more than we expected. Just this weekend, the guys from BimmerToday managed to find a lost photo from Instagram showing the steering wheel and instrument cluster of the new flagship.
Things are looking fresh, keeping in touch with the past, present and future of the brand. The past is represented by the digital rev counter and speedometer that keep the same color scheme as older models. At the same time, the steering wheel seems to have a new design that points to the future, with quality leather and what looks like aluminum included in the mix.
We were surprised to see that the cluster hard surfaces that mimic analogue counters and that’s a good thing in our book. However, we have a sneaky suspicion that this might be a lower-end prototype and that the higher-spec models will be fully digital.
Other things we’re looking forward to on the new 7 Series include augmented reality, split screens with touch-sensitive displays, new materials used in the cabin, a drastic weight loss and the panoramic sunroof.
However, there are still around six months left until we’ll get to see it in the metal at Frankfurt so we’ll have to be patient for now.
