We’ve seen BMW M2 prototypes testing on the Nurburgring and public roads for quite some time now but never before has the car been spotted in the US. A recent photograph taken by Instagram user simfar22 seems to suggest that tests are now being carried over in California.
According to the poster, the car was spotted in Beverly Hills last night and, despite the heavy camouflage, we can tell that this is no ordinary 2 Series.

The front and rear fenders seem to be wider and the beltline a bit higher than on a regular 2er. Furthermore, all 2 Series Coupe models have already been revealed so this camouflage on one of them wouldn’t make sense.

There is one thing that might setting us off and that’s the rear bumper. As you can see, the quad tailpipes are missing but in hindsight, it’s not unusual for BMW prototypes to be testing without the production exhaust on so that’s not a reason to worry.

As for what will hide under the bonnet of the next M car we already know that it’s going to be an inline 6-cylinder turbocharged plant making around 370 HP and 520 Nm of torque. The standard gearbox will be a manual 6-speed with the 7-speed DCT unit possibly on offer as an optional.

Being lighter than an M4, the acceleration times should be close but the bigger Coupe should still be king as the pricing strategy of BMW won’t allow the M2 to live up to its full potential. That’s because it would cannibalize the sales of the two.

We know that the M2 will enter production in November so it remains to see which European show will be the host of its production unveiling. Geneva could show us the concept in March with the world premiere happening this autumn at IAA.
