2016 BMW F87 M2 Gets Green Light

Remember all the fuss the rumors about a possible 1M Coupe created a couple of years ago? Remember how everyone was afraid that it would give the M3 a run for its money? Well, the same ruckus is happening now with the rumors concerning the M2.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, an M2 is in the works and it just got the green light from the Board of Management to go further into tests and be release in late 2015, early 2016.

According to various sources inside BMW quoted by 2addicts.com, the new car will be following the same recipe as its predecessor, the 1M. Just like it, the engine will be an upgraded version of the N55HP unit used on the M235i model that will be making around 370 - 380 HP and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque.

Such a powerful unit won't be used only on the M2, apparently. Back in March, we reported that the new X4 will also be getting this powerplant that will be used in a new M Performance Automobile, most likely to be named X4 M40i.

Apparently, the info we had a couple of month back, claiming that the M2 will be coming out with the most powerful 4-cylinder 2-liter turbo engine in the world was accurate, the Motorsport division testing an 'S48' unit but dropping it eventually. It was based on the B48 motor used on the MINI Cooper S and 225i Active Tourer.

Other good news also brought tears to our eyes. The F87 M2 will be available both in manual and automatic guises, the latter probably using the 7-speed DCT unit seen on all other M cars. But, the most important news of all is that the production won’t be limited, as it was on the 1M that was built in only 6,331 units. This time, anyone that can afford it can get one.
