Today was the big day fans of the BMW X1 were waiting for quite a while now. The new X1 was launched and it’s looking a lot better than we expected to be completely frank. Yes, you can definitely tell this is the new model and we decided to put the two side by side for a better look.
The old model was launched back in 2009 following the Concept that was unveiled at the 2008 Paris Auto Show. Just a couple of changes were needed to convince the board of management to put this thing into production and from there on the crossover wrote history.

Over 730,000 people bought it and with the recent rise in electronics used inside new Bimmers, the old X1 became a sort of people’s favorite due to its old-school hydraulic steering and rear-wheel drive setup.

With the new model that’s all gone. The F48 version is built atop the new UKL platform shared with MINI models but also the 2 Series Active Tourer and Gran Tourer versions. That also means it’s front-wheel drive with the possibility of going all-wheel drive for some more money.

It was all done for more interior space according to the Germans but how much did the car actually gain? Well, the press release says that the car has grown in height by 53 millimeters (2.08 inches) which, in turn, allowed the driver’s seat to be raised by 36 mm (1.4 inches) while the passengers are now sitting 64 mm (2.5 inches) higher.

In standard specification (which is to be read without the 40:20:40 folding seats), the knee room in the back increased by 37 mm (1.4 inches) and up to 66 millimeters (2.59 inches) for the models fitted with adjustable seats.

Boot capacity also went up by 85 liters, reaching a total of 505 liters with the seats up and 1,550 liters with the rear seats folded.

Therefore it seems like all that was promised was delivered and the only question that remains is: how good is the new X1 on the road? In order to figure that out, we’ll have to drive it first.
