Various news outlets, especially from the UK, seem to know something new about the 2016 7 Series. Apparently, the new 7er will make its world debut in Frankfurt, next year, as a 2016 model. This comes in as basically no surprise, even though the timeline is long enough for more scenarios.
Considering the current model is turning 7 in 2015, the automotive world was expecting the Bavarians to release their new version somewhere next year. However, for a car as important as this one, only Frankfurt or Geneva would’ve been appropriate. Since Geneva is set to take place in March, that would’ve been a little too early. Furthermore, IAA does take place in Germany and has been the place where the most iconic models from BMW were launched over the decades.
With the new 7 Series marking a new era in the brand’s history, we reckon there could’ve been no other venue better than this one to host such a debut. The G11 platform will bring the best the company has to offer at this moment and a look into the future.
It will be the first 7er that loses weight compared to its predecessor and the precursor to the new age of car making as BMW understands it, under the pressure of a variety of external factors.
Amongst them you could count the usual competition (the S-Class brought a whole new level to the table), the environmental regulations (that are more stringent than ever) and the aging model that is simply not on par with the rest of the crowd anymore.
Previewed by the Vision Future Luxury concept, the G11/G12 7 Series will be built on the new 35up architecture that is supposed to also underpin the 3 Series, 5 Series and 6 Series models from now on. It will be using an extensive amount of aluminum and CFRP in its construction as well as other innovative, light materials such as organic LEDs and laser headlights, all in the hopes of driving weight down as much as possible.
The new B-family engines will also be incorporated into a variety of models and we could also see the debut of the first 2-liter 4-cylinder engine on a 7 Series. Whether that will be in conjunction with an electric motor or as a standalone plant remains to be seen.
To further counter the S-Class, BMW might also be looking into creating an M Performance model or maybe even an M7 that would go up against the S63 AMG model, featuring an upgraded version of the S63Tu engine from the current M5 with over 600 HP.
