2016 BMW 7 Series Shows Its Body Styling in Latest Spyshots

The 2016 BMW G11 7 Series is apparently getting closer to its production version. Set to be unveiled next autumn at Frankfurt, the German limousine was just caught by our spy photographer in a shape that looks near production ready, allowing us to drool over its new curves and creases.

As far as we can tell, there are some noticeable changes done to the body, compared to its predecessor. For starters, the hood cutline has been moved up, in the fashion that everyone demanded for quite some time. Now, it sits just above the kidney grille and the headlights, as the automotive God intended it to be.

The corona rings up front and the camouflage seem to suggest a sleeker design for the headlights while the kidney grille seems to have grown in size by a noticeable amount. The front bumper is not telling us much at the moment, but we’re expecting it to follow in the footsteps of the Vision Future Luxury Concept as well, just like the rest of the design cues.

On the sides, we can see the door handles for the first time, as well as the window lines along with a character line on the door. Look even more carefully and you might just spot an air breather on the lower side of the front fender, right where it meets with the car’s sills.

The boot seems to be production-ready and we might just see the chrome band integrated into the stoplights somehow, if we’re to believe the camouflage on this prototype. LEDs are certainly going to be used, but as far as Organic LEDs go, we’re going to have to wait apparently. At the same time, we get a clear look at how the exhaust pipes will be integrated in the rear bumper and things are looking good.

Overall, the 7 Series looks a lot sleeker and sportier at the same time. It seems to be going back to its roots, with a design that feels like an evolution based on the E38 model rather than one that picks up where the F01 left off and we’re all for that.

Tech and engines

As we reported earlier this week as we saw the new iDrive interface for the first time, the new 7er will introduce a lot of new tech and a new family of engines.

On the tech front, we’ll get touch-sensitive displays inside the car and an augmented reality head-up display in front of the driver. At the same time, OLEDs could be used inside for decorations, while laser light will be available for the headlights.

As far as the engines go, expect the new B-family of units to be used in both 2-liter and 3-liter inline 6-cylinder guises. Plug-in hybrids will also be on the table to give Mercedes-Benz a run for its money.
