2016 Bentley Bentayga Makes World Debut in Gold at Frankfurt

After showing us their first SUV in a beautiful set of photos ahead of the Frankfurt Motor Show, Bentley decided to bring their Bentayga out in front of a live audience too, giving people a taste of what they’re bringing to the table. Fortunately, we were there and managed to bring back some live photos of the thing.

As the Brits claim, the car feels luxurious from every angle you look. The design, as expected, follows the cues set by other models in the range, not protruding into the wilderness of exploring different possibilities too much. Think of it as some sort of paradox.

The circular headlights up front, the massive grille, and the taillights are all reinterpretations of older shapes that we’ve been getting used to.

The Brits are calling this ‘the fastest, most powerful, most luxurious and most exclusive SUV in the world’ but allow us to disagree for a moment.

Right now, the Bentayga can claim all of these things because it goes unchallenged. Until the Lamborghini Urus or the new Rolls-Royce SUV come out, the Crewe-based company can say whatever they want but there are others in the vicinity, on the prowl, that may rain on their parade.

I’m talking, of course, about the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S that is right up there with the Bentayga in terms of straight up acceleration to 100 km/h (62 mph). While the 6-liter W12 engine of the Bentley, with its 608 HP and 900 Nm (663 lb-ft) of torque allows it to reach the benchmark speed in 4.1 seconds, the Porsche does the same using a 4.8-liter V8 with 570 HP and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft). We’re not all that sure that the scale would tip in favor of the Brit in case of a track exam either.

As for the top speed, indeed, the Cayenne is beat, reaching only as high as 176 mph (283 km/h) while its rival here goes higher, at 187 mph (301 km/h).

And yes, this is a full-size SUV with room for 4 (or maybe 5 but not in the typical way anyone with a Bentley would travel) that weighs over 2 tons, not a supercar. Don’t believe us? Check it out in the photo gallery below.
