When it comes to sport bikes, India is definitely not on the list of the first countries that make such machines. Still, the 2016 Bajaj Pulsar RS200 in Demon Black livery made us want to take a closer look at this segment.
If anything, Bajaj is one of the biggest motorcycle manufacturers on the planet, but because their targets are limited to the huge Indian market and others in the region, their production is largely based on small-displacement bikes. Easier to purchase and cheap to own, these bikes also come with lower taxes and, believe it or not, they do their job quite well.
So it shouldn't surprise you to find out that such machines are sold by the millions each year, from the skimpy bikes that almost look "factory-ratted" to neater rides, such as the pictured 2016 Bajaj Pulsar RS200 Demon Black.
A 200cc bike that produces 24.5 hp
The 2016 Bajaj Pulsar RS200 Demon Black is equipped with a 199.5 cc single-cylinder triple-spark, injected 4-stroke engine with liquid cooling. The power plant can produce a peak of 24.5 hp, and a maximum of 18.6 Nm (13.7 lb-ft) of torque.
Thanks to its 6-speed transmission, the 2016 Bajaj Pulsar RS200 can do 140 km/h (87 mph), which is more than enough for any commuter's needs pretty much anywhere in the world. The wheels are classic cast 17" units and come with hydraulic disc brakes at both ends. The fuel tank holds 13 liters (3.4 US gal) and ABS is optional for a small premium.
The 2016 Bajaj Pulsar RS200 Demon Black harks back to the previous generation of Yamaha R1/R6 machines, at least as far as the front cowl is concerned, with the dual headlights and overall vibe. The bike's bodywork is quite elaborate, but not over-crowded, and brings a most welcome Western sportbike touch.
Despite the clip-on appearance, the handlebars are a single-piece cast part with the upper triple clamp, and breaking one of them might result in an expensive replacement. The dash looks very modern and assertive, even if it lacks the color TFT units of European or Japanese speed demons.
