2016 Audi R8 Design Sketches Are Something to Geek Over

There's no way any car guy has ever resisted the temptation to doodle his favorite '32 Ford or Z/28 Camaro on a piece of paper. However, mastering car design is something out of most people's reach.

We're not saying that you need to study at a professional design school that costs tens of thousands per year, but it probably would hurt. To get an idea of what it takes to work for a big company, check out the renderings for the Audi R8.

This isn't something a guy traced from an official photo of the car; it's what came from the imagination of the designer. Using a play of light and dark grays, the artist suggests the play of light over the rounded body.

The interior appears to have been styled by multiple designers from different backgrounds. Some of them seem to have a background in industrial design or electronics design. Considering the R8 has an amazing cabin, we're glad Audi hired some "outside the box" thinkers.

Some say the new R8 is ugly, but there's no denying that it is now a real supercar. Under the awkward body is the same chassis as the Lamborghini Huracan. You can even get the same 5.2-liter V10 engine with 610 horsepower and a 7-speed twin-clutch gearbox. Both of those are at the back, and they are really pretty from an… ahem… engineering point of view.

You can even buy the R8 in electric flavor - the e-tron model with 340 kW and a torque of 920 Nm (678.6 lb-ft). It will get from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds and travel for up to 450 kilometers (279.6 mi) on a single fill of battery juice.
