The all-new Audi A4 is going to debut very soon. It's a model that carries tremendous importance for the German carmaker. Not surprisingly, while the exterior design is not as bold as Mercedes', the interior is as classy as everyone expects it to be.
With its door swung wide-open, the Audi A4 test prototype that's been touring the Nurburgring for the past months gave us what we need to get excited. In contrast with Mercedes' W205 C-Class, there are no shiny surfaces. It's all a mix of black with black and a few small aluminum elements.
Moving on to the center console, we noticed a divergence from what the Q7 brought. The gear selector is tall, and the MMI controller is a round knob behind it, in contrast with what's on the SUV, which has a pad. This more traditional layout will be appreciated by customers who are trading in their older A4 models.
The dashboard is completely obscured, but we expect minimalist toggles and a screen perched on top. The all-new A4 and A4 Avant will be revealed in full production guise by the end of the month, Audi says. Their official debut will take place at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Twin S4 models and the A5 family have also begun testing, but they will probably not be ready for a while.
Built on the MLB Evo platform, this new generation of A4 will be lighter and stronger. Engines will reportedly vary from a 1.4-liter turbo to V6 turbos.
The versions
The steering wheel is identically designed to that in the new Q7, while the buttons are also shared with the TT and A3.
