We have fresh details about the Alpine sportscar. After patent images had revealed its production-ready form about a week ago, technical data emerged about its powertrain, which may turn out to be a new 1.8 TCe turbo.
For several months, Renault fans have been trying to figure out if the Alpine will use the 2-liter of the Megane RS or the 1.6 of its Clio baby brother. It turns out that neither will get the chance of going RWD.

Both Renault and Nissan have invested into the development of a 1.8-liter turbo that's derived from the current 1.6. In the Alpine, there will be no less than three output versions, plus other vehicles will use it as well.

The first two will offer 250 PS and 275 PS. A more powerful 300 PS model will have a different cylinder head, cooling system and optimized mapping.

The 1.8 TCe is also going to be used by the Megane IV once it gets the Renaultsport treatment. A report from Automotivpress suggests Nissan is plotting a Golf GTI rival of its own, the Pulsar Nismo.

Because the Alpine is essentially a Porsche Cayman rival, it needs a cool auto gearbox, which will come in the form of an updated EDC twin-clutch unit. Currently, it can only hold 220 horsepower and 260 Nm of torque, so its clutch packs and other components need to be beefed up a little.

Editor's note: Take this story with a grain of salt until Renault says something. However, the future of French cars sounds terribly exciting for us!
