Less than 24 hours from now on, the recently restored Museo Storico Alfa Romeo in Milan will see the debut of the all-new 2016 Alfa Romeo Giulia (Tipo 952). A credible source tells that it will bear the name of Milano as a nod to the 75 compact executive car.
For the younger Alfisti among us, the Alfa Romeo 75 was sold in the United States and was the last model developed by Alfa before Fiat acquired the Turin-based automaker. In a recent interview, Alfa Romeo CEO Harald Wester told that “the 159, for example, was a result of the partnership between GM and Fiat and was pretty much a mess." Furthermore, we know that the 2016 Alfa Romeo Giulia (Tipo 952) is a global vehicle.
We reached an FCA US representative for an answer on the purported Milano nameplate and we were gingerly told that all mysteries will be unraveled on June 24th in Milan. From the most recent spy photographs courtesy of AlVolante.it, we can see that the 2016 Alfa Romeo Giulia/Tipo 952/Milano/whatever is a gorgeously proportioned machine with a long hood and a short rear overhang.
Red brake calipers and drilled discs on all four corners, four exhaust tips, LED daytime running lights incorporated in the headlamps and LED taillamps, and a 4C-inspired front fascia design are the name of the game here. With a longitudinally-placed engine and rear-/all-wheel drive, the 2016 Alfa Romeo compact executive sedan will be an instant commercial success, make no mistake about it.
Production of the 2016 Alfa Romeo Giulia (Tipo 952) or Milano, whatever it will be called, will commence later this year at the Stabilimento Fiat di Cassino factory near the Piedimonte San Germano. The assembly plant currently produces the Giulietta compact hatchback. Expect the first units of the Tipo 952 sedan to arrive in Italian dealerships lots as soon as late as April 2016.
In Alfa Romeo-related news, the Tipo 952 paves the way for an executive sedan (Tipo 961) that will replace the old Alfa Romeo 166. Two SUVs, including a Tipo 952-derived crossover known as Tipo 949, are in the cards. A second compact executive car, based on the Tipo 952, is said to arrive in two-door coupe guise. Last but not least, expect a speciality vehicle (probably a two-seater roadster based on the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata) and two C-segment models (including a replacement for the Giulietta).
UPDATE: the Italian manufacturer applied for the Giulia trademark with the Ufficio Italiano Brevetti e Marchi (check photo gallery). The application was published today, which means only one thing: ladies and gentlemen, the Milano nameplate is out. Prepare for the unveiling of the 2016 Alfa Romeo Giulia sedan!
