2016 Alfa Romeo Giulia (Tipo 952) Quadrifoglio Verde is Dressed to Impress

Some people say that emotions make the difference between producing and creating something. It may sound like the most Italian thing to say about a motor vehicle, but the 2016 Alfa Romeo Giulia in Quadrifoglio Verde guise is the kind of four-wheeled work of art that stirs the blood and captures the imagination of car enthusiasts all over.

This motoring editor doesn’t believe in the “you’re not a proper petrolhead unless you’ve owned an Alfa,” idiom. Nor am I the biggest Alfisti out there, though the Italian company’s heritage is to my liking. The Giulia makes a case in point on what Alfa Romeo is all about: unmistakable Italian design, world-class performance, thinking outside of the box, and a nod to the all-important racing pedigree that cemented the Italian company.

Opinions may be divided, but there’s no denying that the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio Verde is dressed to impress. An additional detail that highlights the importance of this model for Alfa Romeo’s imminent rejuvenation is the modernized logo, as well as the “La meccanica delle emozioni,” tagline. The mechanics of emotion may sound like Dante Alighieri had one too many, but it does fit the brand-new Giulia like a glove.

The 510 horsepower machine animated by a Ferrari-infused twin-turbo V6 is not your typical car. In the first of the couple of videos attached below, Alfa Romeo tells us: “Non puoi dire di conoscere un’auto se non conosci la sua storia.” That’s the Italian way of saying that you simply can’t know a car unless you are aware of the company's history. Considering that without Alfa Romeo we wouldn’t have Ferrari, the Giulia QV encompasses all those little things that matter. Like a proper six-speed manual and a rear-wheel drive.

Alfa Romeo featured pre-war and post-WWII race cars in the first of the two videos, including the bite-the-back-of-your-hand beautiful Alfa Romeo Tubolare Zagato 2. A big question persists though: is the Giulia QV encapsulating the spirit of Alfa Romeo in its purest form, as the manufacturer is telling us on its Italian website? Not quite. But while it’s far from the purest form of the Alfa Romeo spirit everybody is talking about, the Giulia QV is the right direction for a brand that has been in limbo for 5 years now.

Welcome back, Alfa Romeo.
