2016 Acura NSX Debuts at Detroit, Jerry Seinfeld Orders One On the Spot

When somebody talks about the first-gen of the Acura / Honda NSX, I automatically think of Ayrton Senna hell-and-toe-ing the mid-engined Japanese sportscar at the Suzuka circuit. But as far as the 2016 Acura NSX is concerned, Senna wouldn’t be able to do its pedal dancing because the all-new hybrid supercar has only two pedals. Like that Bob Dylan tune says - the times they are a-changin'.

After years of speculation and a prototype that caught fire on the Nurburgring, Honda’s luxury division from the US came clean with the production-ready 2016 Acura NSX and we’re happy to report that this thing looks awe-inspiring in the flesh.

It’s so breathtakingly gorgeous you can’t help yourself but let your jaw drop all the way to ground level. Every little crease seems to have been peened by swift katana slashes.

On a scale of 1 to 10, this sharp-looking eco-friendly machine is a solid 11.

Our mega live photo gallery below makes more justice to the car than mere words because seeing is believing. In other 2016 Acura NSX-related news, we’re told that the body is made of Sheet Molding Composite (SMC) and aluminum, while the hybrid powertrain produces north of 550 horsepower, thanks to a longitudinally-placed twin-turbo V6 and three electric motors.

All four wheels are animated by the grunt thanks to a so-called Sport Hybrid Super Handling AWD system. In terms of cog-swapping, engineers told us that a newly-developed nine-speed dual-clutch gearbox takes care of that. Coming as standard with 19-inch wheels front and 20-inch rear, the NSX also benefits from carbon ceramic brakes running six-piston calipers up front and four-piston at the rear.

If you're on the floor of the Detroit Auto Show you can't help but compared the NSX to the new GT concept. These two drew the most attention but they are a lot different at a first glance. The Ford wins when it comes to the interior build quality but (and we're being subjective now) the NSX might steal it when it comes to the outside design.

On the environmental side of things, you can't help but notice that the NSX is a lot more eco-friendly. It has electric motors on board, after all. The GT on the other hand is a lot more hardcore. Bottom line, the entire Acura brand repositions itself behind this new product while the Ford concept is just a small part of the American brand.

From up close you wouldn’t say this super trooper measures 176 inches (4,470 mm) in length, even though its diminutive 4.78-inch (1,215 mm) height is very obvious sitting right next to it. Expected to hold a starting MSRP of around $150,000, one of the first guys to put an order on Acura’s 2016 NSX is comedian and notorious Porsche-filiac Jerry Seinfeld.

Jerry will be pleased to find out that a lil’ driving aid gizmo can set up all three electric motors for a “zero delay” launch off the starting line. This could prove handy for shaming full-fledged Italian exotica like the Ferrari 458 Speciale when the traffic lights turn green.
